Jewellery care.
Most gold jewellery, together with diamonds, rubies and sapphires, can be cleaned with warm soapy water and be gently brushed, if necessary, using an old toothbrush. Be careful not to catch the claw settings of rings, as this may loosen the stones. 18 carat gold really is the optimum carat for jewellery products, it will not become tarnished, it does not cause any allergic skin reactions, its composition is ideal to manufacture -. unlike 9ct and 14ct gold which can be harmed by chlorine, bleach and cleaning chemicals. Chlorine can also cause stress corrosion cracking in 9ct and 14ct gold. (swimmers – be aware of the chemical reactions to chlorine wearing 9ct a& 14ct gold!) For all other gem stones, including cultured pearls, avoid ultrasonic cleaning, sudden temperature changes, cosmetics, hair sprays, perfume and household cleaners.
Cultured pearl care.
Fine quality cultured pearls with thick nacre layers will last for generations, if cared for correctly. Cultured pearls MUST be kept free of perfumes, hair sprays, cosmetics, perspiration and dirt. To clean, gently wipe with a slightly damp cloth. If you wear your pearls regularly, we encourage you to have them cleaned and restrung, as over time, the silk, on which our pearls are strung, will stretch, weaken and become soiled.
Turquoise, opal and pearl care.
Please treat these with the utmost care, they are porous and so be careful not to get them wet with anything. Do NOT wash them!
Hallmarks.
Our jewellery comes with a UK Assay Office hallmark under the UK Hallmarking Act regulations (minimum weight regulations). This gives a guarantee to the customer that the item has been independently tested to be of the stated purity. A UK hallmark contains at least three symbols; the sponsor’s mark (often called a makers mark), a number indicating the purity or fineness in parts per thousand (e.g. 750, meaning 750 parts pure gold out of 1000. 750 is 18 ct gold ( hence where the name of our company came from), and an Assay Office mark. There are additional, optional marks; a date letter, a fineness symbol and a common control mark.
A UK hallmark covers gold, silver and (from 1976) platinum.
So, the pure gold content (24 carat) of items, in parts per thousand, are:
9ct = 375/1000 , 14ct = 585/1000 , 18ct = 750/1000 (where our name comes from)
22ct = 916/1000
For Sterling Silver 925/1000, Britannia Silver 958/1000 and platinum 950/1000
With no negative tolerances permitted (unlike the US system, where gold is allowed a ‘half carat’ negative tolerance, so could be 17.5 carat, unless the word ‘plumb’ is added).
So, an item of 18 carat gold jewellery contains ¾ pure gold, compared to 9 carat which contains only just over 1/3rd pure gold.
What is a carat? Gold
One carat, when referred to gold, is 1/24th by weight. 18 carat gold is 18/24th or 750 parts pure gold out of 1000. The higher the carat value, the higher the proportion of gold in relation to the base metal content. Pure gold is, therefore, 24 carat. (see hallmarks)
What is a carat? Stones
A carat, when applied to gemstones means a weight of 1/5th (0.2) of a metric gram. It is conventionally divided into 100 parts (called points) 100 points (or 200milligrams) is 1 carat. A half carat stone weighs 100 milligrams or called 50 points (sometimes written 0.50 carat or ½ carat)

Cultured pearl grading.
Unlike diamonds, cultured pearls are not evaluated by an industry wide grading system. However, pearl merchants have developed their own grading scales for comparative purposes. So two different pearl strands of the same length may be priced differently. There are many criteria applied to judging cultured pearl quality, size, nacre, colour etc. We only source our pearls from the highest respected pearl merchants, thus ensuring top quality cultured pearls, which will last for generations.
What is white, red, rose or pink gold?
White, red, rose and pink gold are coloured gold alloys. Pure gold (24 carat) is yellow. Gold is mixed with other metals to produce an alloy. So all that is needed for different shades of gold is to increase the proportion of certain metals. For example, to get ‘red gold’ more copper is added. In 18ct white gold, palladium (17%) is added to the 75% pure gold and 4% silver and 4% copper content. It is common industry practice to rhodium plate all ‘white gold’ jewellery and some platinum jewellery. Rhodium is very bright and reflective. When the rhodium plating wears through over time, the colour of the actual white palladium alloy can be seen as a grayish colour.
What is the difference between 9 carat and 18 carat gold?
18 carat gold jewellery is made up of 750 parts pure gold out of 1000 parts, the remaining 250 parts being made up of other metals, mainly copper and silver. 9 carat gold jewellery is made up of 375 parts pure gold out of 1000 parts, the remaining 625 parts is made up of other metals such as silver, nickel, palladium and zinc. So 9 carat gold is just over 1/3rd gold content, whereas, 18 carat gold has ¾ pure gold content.
18 carat gold is practically completely resistant to chemical attack in normal use, whereas 9 carat gold is much less resistant. Be aware that 9 carat gold will tarnish, go dull, bleach some fabrics and sometimes turn black from chemicals in the atmosphere, perspiration and household cleaners. That is why sometimes some people have an allergic reaction to wearing 9 carat gold, leaving black or green marks on the skin. This is a chemical reaction to the metal alloys, not the gold, usually the nickel in 9 carat gold reacting with the skin. Nickel is the most common cause of dermatitis through allergic reactions when in contact with the skin.
Nickel is not present in 18 carat gold. Our 750jewellery 18 carat gold items are nickel safe and our policy is to use only ’white gold’ alloys containing palladium.
Ring finger size measurement.
If you don’t know the finger size and you want to buy a ring as a surprise gift, it is best not to guess the size. We will send the ring to you as an ‘average’ size (click ‘unknown’ on your ring size order). It is better to present the ring and then have it adjusted accurately by a reputable jeweller, or return it to us to be sized (for a small postage and packaging fee).
We can send you a finger measure card if required.
It is always better to measure the finger itself, rather than an existing ring. Due to her monthly cycle, a woman’s finger size can rise and fall, due to water retention. Also, cold and hot temperatures affect the ‘feel’ of the ring when worn. It is just a matter of getting a comfortable balance.
The best size is when the ring fits snugly and gives some small resistance when taken off.

Platinum
Why is platinum more expensive than gold?
Platinum is 35 times more rare than gold so the price is invariably higher.
Platinum purity
Because of the purity of platinum jewellery (950 parts pure platinum out of 1000 parts, or 95% purity) it is ideal for people with sensitive skin.
Allergic reactions are usually caused (commonly in 9ct gold) by reaction to the metal alloy content of 9ct gold.
As platinum jewellery is extremely pure (95%) it is practically hypoallergenic.
As an interesting point, the same item of platinum jewellery weighs approximately one third more than the same item of 18ct gold.
