The Technical Difference
When it comes to gold, a carat is 1/24th by weight – this means that if you have an 18 carat gold ring, 18 parts out of 24 are pure gold. Your 9 carat gold ring contains just 9 parts gold out of 24.
Low Quality
We’re sure you’ll agree that 9 out of 24 doesn’t sound very much – in fact it’s less than 40%. Over 60% of your 9 carat gold jewellery is actually made up of other metals like nickel and zinc. It’s no wonder then that 9 carat gold is often associated with low quality!
Many of the problems that people experience with gold jewellery – allergies for example and stained skin - are caused by the low quality of 9 carat gold. Gold itself is practically hypoallergenic and the reaction is actually caused by the other metals contained within the jewellery.
So Why Is 18 Carat Gold Better?
18 carat gold is ¾ pure. It has a very low level of other metals so it’s friendly to sensitive skin! Many people are allergic to the nickel found in 9 carat gold but at 750 Jewellery all of our gold is nickel-safe.
18 carat gold is also far less reactive than 9 carat. You may have noticed that 9 carat gold tarnishes or dulls, and reacts badly to common household cleaners. 18 carat gold simply doesn’t have these problems thanks to its purity – your new bracelet will never go green!
Is 24 Carat Gold Even Better?
Well, yes and no. Of course 24 carat gold is 100% pure, but gold is actually a soft metal and we like our jewellery to be durable! Mixed with a bit of copper and silver our 18 carat gold is strong as well as superior – the perfect combination for a special gift.
